Jellystone Parks In Canyon Lake And Kerrville Have Become Playgrounds For Winter Texans
Jellystone Parks in the Texas Hill Country are popular summer camping destinations for families with children, largely because of the activities they provide with Yogi Bear™ and Boo Boo™.
But in the wintertime, after the bears have gone into hibernation, the Jellystone Parks in Canyon Lake and Kerrville are transformed into playgrounds for Winter Texans.
“It’s a little bit like heaven for us,” said Emma Anderson of Wisconsin, who enjoys the winter season at the Canyon Lake Jellystone Park™ with her husband, Clark.
In fact, the Andersons have so much fun with Winter Texan friends that they celebrate Christmas with family in Wisconsin over Thanksgiving weekend so they can spend an extra month at the Canyon Lake park.
“They are just very hospitable,” Anderson said of Jellystone’s campground staff. “We also like Hill Country because it is a very relaxing area and there are lots of activities.”
Anderson line dances almost every day, either in town or at the campground, which also has an indoor pool. “Anybody who wants to can use the pool to keep up with their exercises,” she said.
The Andersons also like the fact that there are plenty of doctors and dentists nearby, as well as a hospital in neighboring New Braunfels.
Marsha and Richard Lappin of Wichita, Kan. have similar perspectives about the Jellystone Park in Kerrville, and they, too, come to the park right after Thanksgiving to spend the winter in Hill Country.
The Lappins enjoy the park so much they bought a park model RV, which they use as their winter home at the campground.
“We like the weather, but most of all we like our fellow Winter Texans,” Marsha Lappin said, “and the people in the area are very friendly. It’s a very supportive community with lots of arts activities. There’s a lot of quilting activities and golf courses for the men in Kerrville, Fredericksburg and Comfort.”
Lappin said some of her Winter Texan friends sew clothing for a local children’s home. “We have our local pet projects,” she said, adding that many of Winter Texans who gather at Kerrville Jellystone Park™ enjoy each other’s company so much that they have reunions during the summer months.
“It’s a big happy family,” she said.
The Jellystone Parks in Canyon Lake and Kerrville are both owned and operated by Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Northgate Resorts, which has a reputation for excellence in campground operations.
In fact, the Jellystone Park in Canyon Lake has done such a good job of consistently making improvements that it received a Facility of the Year Award in 2015 from Leisure Systems, Inc., the Milford, Ohio-based company that franchises Jellystone Parks.
Both parks also have extensive onsite amenities, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools as well as horseshoe and volleyball courts. The Canyon Lake Jellystone Park also has a disc golf course, a basketball court and a bark park, while the Kerrville location has a fitness center, a miniature golf course and an on-site saloon with draft beer.
