While most Halloween themed activities take place in September and October, Halloween themed activities begin as early as mid-August at the Jellystone Park™ in Grayling
But Jellystone Parks in Michigan are giving children and their families multiple opportunities to dress up and go trick or treating inside their campgrounds during the weekends leading up to Halloween.
“Our Halloween themed weekends are some of our most popular weekends of the year, so it behooves families to reserve their campsites and cabins several weeks in advance,” said Michele Wisher, vice president of marketing for Milford, Ohio-based Leisure Systems, Inc., which franchises Jellystone Parks across North America.
Following are details on the Halloween and fall themed activities that will be offered this fall at Jellystone Parks in Michigan:
— Frankenmuth: This park has numerous Halloween and fall themed weekends in September and October. Activities for Sept. 22 – 24 include fall crafts, pumpkin painting, a flashlight lollipop hunt and a Saturday night marshmallow roast with ghost stories. These activities coincide with Frankenmuth’s famous Oktoberfest Festival in Heritage Park. Activities for Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 include a scavenger hunt, pumpkin painting and a pumpkin toss, a Great Pumpkin Hunt for children 8 and under, as well as trick or treating. The weekends of Oct. 6 – 8 and Oct. 13 – 15 include scavenger hunts, campsite decorating and costume contests and trick or treating as well as a glow wagon ride. Activities for Oct. 20 – 22 include fall crafts, pumpkin painting, a spooky relay and ghost stomp, a candy treasure hunt and mask making. www.frankenmuthjellystone.com

— South Haven: A Fall Harvest Weekend is set for Sept. 8 – 10 in which guests can make their own caramel apples and try their hands at making applesauce around the campfire. This park will also have six consecutive Halloween themed weekends starting Sept. 15 – 17 with campsite decorating, costume and pumpkin carving contests as well as a scarecrow making contest.
“We provide the structure and the straw and the campers come up with the costumes and the creativity,” said park co-owner Susan Novotny. “One year we had OctoMom and the scarecrow had eight babies in her arm. One year they copied me in my uniform and name tag. We have had football players, brides, some scary, some not. We have our campers judge the winner.”
This year, the first of the Halloween themed weekends Sept. 15 – 17 will be a Zombie Apocalypse Weekend. “Everything on this weekend will take on the zombie-theme,” Novotny said.
The park will also have a haunted pavilion during its Halloween weekends scheduled for late September and October. www.southhavenjellystone.com.
